Calligram

The goal of this project was to recreate a photo of myself using words to fill in the space. I began by drawing tentative lines over the photo representing the sizes and shaped I wanted to use. Then, I typed a few words at a time and then manipulated each letter individually to fit better and leave less holes in the image. I constantly zoomed in and out to make sure I was making the letters an appropriate size. This process was very time consuming, especially the lips and eyes. While I am satisfied with the face and shirt, I feel like with more time I could have paid more attention to the hair and made it look less flat. I chose the background color based on the background color of the original photo because I felt like it fit well.

Video Art

View here:  https://youtu.be/EHUY03vcvs4 Artist Statement: When trying to decide how to approach this project, I began by thinking of how I could incorporate technology both into the theme and the production of the video. I ended up using the Photo Booth application on my Mac to record a video using the heat map effect. I experimented with how the effect worked by moving different distances from the camera and moving my hand over the camera, causing a flickering effect where the heatmap colors changed temporarily. I utilized technology by recording myself using various devices- my phone, laptop, and game console. The way that the heatmap responded to the screens of the devices was interesting. To edit the video, I used Final Cut Pro to import each clip, trim them, and use various effects. I used different opacities to overlay clips onto each other, in order to achieve a more complex image. I also added overlay trails, kaleidoscopes, mirror images, and duplication. These eff...

Flipbook

My goal with this flipbook was primarily to create a story that has some cohesive elements but is still abstract. The included various different 'scenes' like a guy getting rained on, finding an umbrella, and then abandoning the umbrella only for a frog to fall on it. The frog then catches a fly with its tongue and transforms into Pikachu from the Pokemon series. Pikachu gets captured by a Pokeball, which is then abducted by an alien spaceship. The ship turns pink and morphs into a heart, which undergoes a series of transformations.

Madame Butterfly Thoughts

I thought that the Madame Butterfly animation was very thought-provoking and unique. The story was unpredictable and kept me interested in watching, like when the woman 'gave birth' to the fish that then transformed into a child, and when the child is taken away and the woman disassembles herself. The beginning of the story seemed peaceful and romantic, with her and the man falling in love while the music was also slow and peaceful. Then, she gives birth to her child and everything continues to see happy. They are literally connected by a string, which could symbolize an umbilical cord, and seem to be having fun. The music becomes a bit more intense as they hear the ship returning, signifying that things may not remain so peaceful. The woman seems very eager for the man to return and waits for him excitedly, even placing some flowers on her head as if she wants him to see her as beautiful. However, he stays on the ship and parties.  I find this situation to be very sad because...
