Video Art

View here:  https://youtu.be/EHUY03vcvs4 Artist Statement: When trying to decide how to approach this project, I began by thinking of how I could incorporate technology both into the theme and the production of the video. I ended up using the Photo Booth application on my Mac to record a video using the heat map effect. I experimented with how the effect worked by moving different distances from the camera and moving my hand over the camera, causing a flickering effect where the heatmap colors changed temporarily. I utilized technology by recording myself using various devices- my phone, laptop, and game console. The way that the heatmap responded to the screens of the devices was interesting. To edit the video, I used Final Cut Pro to import each clip, trim them, and use various effects. I used different opacities to overlay clips onto each other, in order to achieve a more complex image. I also added overlay trails, kaleidoscopes, mirror images, and duplication. These effects

Music

Punk: Green Day is an example of a very well-known punk band. They fit into this category because of their themes of rebellion and dissatisfaction with society. A theme of the song American Idiot in particular is that it is critical of technology and the way it is used to control people. 90's: Pearl Jam is one of the most famous 90's bands. In this music video you can see how technology was applied in the video editing process to create varying effects like overlaying videos, adjusting colors, and a strobe light effect. electroclash: Justice is a French electronic music band classified as electro house/electroclash. The various influences and synthesized sounds can be heard in their music. Technology-wise, they use a variety of equipment to produce their music and perform it live, using Ableton, input devices, synthesizers, and more.  Girl Power: Marina Diamandis incorporates female empowerment into her lyrics and videos (as well as comments on technolo

Performance Art

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i86xXaeDCtg&feature=youtu.be Our task was to create a piece of performance art. I partnered up with another girl, Daniela, and we worked together to put together a posterboard with common things people dislike about technology. We also filled up balloons with water and food coloring. Then, we set the poster up in a noticable location and filmed it inconspicuously. The intent was for people to throw the balloons at the things they disliked the most. A group of girls came by and threw the balloons around for a while as captured in the time lapse video we took. (I slowed down the time lapse somewhat since it was very fast.) In the end it gave the poster board an interesting drippy effect with various different colors and the board itself got dented by the balloons, making it a unique piece of artwork.

Xerox Project

I attempted to create a piece of art primarily using curly hair texture and hand prints. The hand prints gradually change from hovering over the scanner to fully pressing against it, creating a gradation. The curly hair was intended to look like waves or flowers that the hand is gradually reaching towards.

Grid Art

I started by taking a piece of patterned paper and making a grid with a hot glue gun, creating evenly spaced dots. It took a long time to carefully create each dot. I sketched out the basic shape of what I wanted to make, a drawing of Kirby from the video game series of the same name. Then I began painting over individual glue dots with different colored paints. First I painted the outline in black and then filled in the shoes, mouth, and cheeks with red.  Lastly I filled in the body with pink paint to finish off the image of Kirby, and added white highlights to the eyes as a finishing touch. Overall, I like the final project because of the 3D effect of the bubbles, which gives it a fun shape and texture.

Flipbook

My goal with this flipbook was primarily to create a story that has some cohesive elements but is still abstract. The included various different 'scenes' like a guy getting rained on, finding an umbrella, and then abandoning the umbrella only for a frog to fall on it. The frog then catches a fly with its tongue and transforms into Pikachu from the Pokemon series. Pikachu gets captured by a Pokeball, which is then abducted by an alien spaceship. The ship turns pink and morphs into a heart, which undergoes a series of transformations.

Camera Obscura

I decided to make a camera obscura using a cereal box. I began by gathering the supplies: Cereal box, bag, scissors, tape, and a thumbtack. Then I cut a square in the box: Then I cut the bag and taped it over the hole: Lastly, I used the thumbtack to poke a hole in the opposite side of the cereal box. Then it was time to hold it up to a light source. I used a lamp that hangs above my desk. Although it's somewhat dark and not the easiest to see in a picture, there is an inverted reflection of the lamp: (You can see the large circular rim and the cord coming out of the bottom rather than the top) Overall, I thought it was an interesting project to do and would like to see what a large-scale camera obscura looks like too.

Technology

The technology that I chose to focus on is music streaming. Music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora would not exist if not for the many technologies that came before them. Going back to the 1800’s, the invention of the phonograph marked a breakthrough in music technology. It allowed for sounds to be recorded and re-played with quality and accuracy. Phonographs became very popular and themselves led to the next advancements in music technology that allowed many people to experience the same songs together. One is the record store, the first of which was founded in 1894, and the first in America coming in 1932. Record stores allowed people to discover new music and develop their own tastes. Additionally, the invention of the jukebox placed music in public places, allowing for a convenient listening experience. While the concept and first type of jukebox came in the 1890’s, the actual term began in the U.S. in the 1940’s. While these technologies were major br

Broadway Show Thoughts

After looking through Angel's blog, I saw some interesting broadway shows that I didn't know existed. For example, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The broadway version seems interesting and the props and technology used look very thought-out and complicated. I also liked the excerpt of Don't Rain On My Parade because I'm familiar with that song, so it was interesting to see a different performance of it. I also liked the performance from the new Mary Poppins, it reminded me of the original one but with a more modern take, and I think the new actress did a good job maintaining the same character of Mary Poppins. There are definitely a lot of broadway shows on the blog that I didn't recognize, as I don't know much about broadway in general, but the ones I watched were all very interesting and I would definitely like to see more broadway shows in general, the only one I've seen being Jersey Boys (of which I didn't see any clips from on the blog.)

Bluebeard's Castle- Opera Essay

I researched the Opera “Bluebeard’s Castle” by first looking into the tale that inspired the story. The fable of Bluebeard dates back to the late 1600s, when a French author, Charles Perrault, wrote the story of a man who murdered his wives after they discovered the bodies of the previous women. The supernatural element to this story is the key that the final wife uses to enter the torture chamber; after dropping it on the bloody floor, she finds that the blood reappears on the key no matter how much she attempts to clean it. Because of this, Bluebeard learns of her discovery and threatens to kill her and her sister. Just in time, she is rescued by her brothers and Bluebeard is killed. The inspiration for this tale is not known for sure, but many speculate that Bluebeard is based off of Gilles de Rais, a French nobleman and serial killer who is said to have murdered many children, or Conomor the Accursed, who legends state murdered his wives when they became pregnant

Madame Butterfly Thoughts

I thought that the Madame Butterfly animation was very thought-provoking and unique. The story was unpredictable and kept me interested in watching, like when the woman 'gave birth' to the fish that then transformed into a child, and when the child is taken away and the woman disassembles herself. The beginning of the story seemed peaceful and romantic, with her and the man falling in love while the music was also slow and peaceful. Then, she gives birth to her child and everything continues to see happy. They are literally connected by a string, which could symbolize an umbilical cord, and seem to be having fun. The music becomes a bit more intense as they hear the ship returning, signifying that things may not remain so peaceful. The woman seems very eager for the man to return and waits for him excitedly, even placing some flowers on her head as if she wants him to see her as beautiful. However, he stays on the ship and parties.  I find this situation to be very sad because

Extra Credit 1

Object name: Eyelumination Artist's statement: I chose to combine two unrelated objects, a lamp and an eyeball. I looked around my room and the first thing I saw was my desk lamp, so I considered what other object would blend well with it. I chose an eyeball because of the circular shape. I think if this were a real object, the eyeball would follow whoever is in the room and light up in that direction. It is meant to be slightly creepy.

Raul Cuero Interview Thoughts

I think that there are many ways to apply Cuero's concepts to everyday life. His ideas about having a "universal consciousness" and transcending local thoughts and prejudices can be applied in most discussions, whether it be about a global issue or with someone who may come from a different background. By thinking this way, one can keep an open mind and attempt to learn a new perspective from others, rather than only accepting information that conforms to already-held beliefs. He also discussed using creativity to change people's expectations of what they think you can do. By doing "the unknown" rather than things that are already expected, even in small ways, people will begin to become more open to new ideas. This can be done in daily life in many situations, simply by thinking about a problem in a different way than before and finding a new solution. Spending more time in nature and less on electronics is another idea that is easy to apply in daily li

Art And Technology First Thoughts

Hi there, my name is Brook. I'm a sophomore majoring in New Media at the University of Tampa. I'm originally from Illinois but have lived in Florida since I was about 8. I like doing digital art and to some extent, programming. My first feelings on this class are that it seems fun! The projects seem interesting and it seems like there will be a lot to cover.  From this class, I expect to gain a lot more knowledge about how art and technology influence each other and evolve over time.
