Collage

The goal of this project was to create a collage in Photoshop using at least 15 images of living things. I cut out each image from its background, doing my best to make sure the outline was not too harsh or too blurry. Then, I arranged the images. I had to make sure they overlapped each other perfectly with no white space in the background while also attempting to make sure colors were spread out across the image in a pleasing way- for example, having green in opposite corners and surrounding a dark object like the tapir with lighter objects like the frog and flowers. My overall theme was rainforest/jungle creatures, making the panda a bit of an outlier, but too adorable to resist.

Video Art

View here:  https://youtu.be/EHUY03vcvs4 Artist Statement: When trying to decide how to approach this project, I began by thinking of how I could incorporate technology both into the theme and the production of the video. I ended up using the Photo Booth application on my Mac to record a video using the heat map effect. I experimented with how the effect worked by moving different distances from the camera and moving my hand over the camera, causing a flickering effect where the heatmap colors changed temporarily. I utilized technology by recording myself using various devices- my phone, laptop, and game console. The way that the heatmap responded to the screens of the devices was interesting. To edit the video, I used Final Cut Pro to import each clip, trim them, and use various effects. I used different opacities to overlay clips onto each other, in order to achieve a more complex image. I also added overlay trails, kaleidoscopes, mirror images, and duplication. These eff...

Flipbook

My goal with this flipbook was primarily to create a story that has some cohesive elements but is still abstract. The included various different 'scenes' like a guy getting rained on, finding an umbrella, and then abandoning the umbrella only for a frog to fall on it. The frog then catches a fly with its tongue and transforms into Pikachu from the Pokemon series. Pikachu gets captured by a Pokeball, which is then abducted by an alien spaceship. The ship turns pink and morphs into a heart, which undergoes a series of transformations.

Grid Art

I started by taking a piece of patterned paper and making a grid with a hot glue gun, creating evenly spaced dots. It took a long time to carefully create each dot. I sketched out the basic shape of what I wanted to make, a drawing of Kirby from the video game series of the same name. Then I began painting over individual glue dots with different colored paints. First I painted the outline in black and then filled in the shoes, mouth, and cheeks with red.  Lastly I filled in the body with pink paint to finish off the image of Kirby, and added white highlights to the eyes as a finishing touch. Overall, I like the final project because of the 3D effect of the bubbles, which gives it a fun shape and texture.
